Ann Janssen has a passion for estate planning law and is special counsel and the divisional head of Estate First Lawyers. She is a Queensland Law Society accredited specialist in succession law and has over 20 years of experience in estate planning law.  She is noted for delivering innovative solutions to blended families and strategies to prevent inheritances going 'L' shaped (that is, to stop inheritances from ending up in the hands of unintended recipients). Ann also deals with the estate planning matters in the firm which involve complex advice regarding how various structures pass on the death of key participants, such as self-managed super funds, companies and family trusts. She is a keen advocate of testamentary trusts as a tax effective tool in inheritance planning.

Ann has an Arts degree majoring in Economics as well as a Law degree with Honours from the University of Queensland. She also graduated with a Master of Business Administration in 2004, taking out the Graduate School of Management prize for best MBA of the year. Understanding balance sheets and tax & super issues are an indispensable part of the legal services Ann offers her client's.

Ann is a member of the Australian Tax Institute, The Society of Trusts and Estate Practitioners, QLD Law Society, Women in Super and Mensa Australia.

Ann is a noted speaker on her pet subjects of estate planning and business. She has spoken at Universities, Legal and Financial Symposiums, financial planning groups and their clients, marketing groups and law firms. Ann has the ability to present complex estate planning information in a powerful but simplified way. She calls her speaking style 'infotainment' – valuable information presented in an entertaining format drawing on colourful stories and insights that she has experienced over the years.

Kylie Costigan joined Estate First Lawyers in 2010 as a senior associate.

Kylie is one of only forty-four Queensland Law Society Accredited Specialists in Succession law and holds a Bachelor of Laws with Honours from the University of Queensland and a Graduate Diploma in Practical Legal Education and Training from the University of Queensland.

Kylie is a member of the Society of Trusts and Estate Practitioners and QLD Law Society.

Kylie has almost exclusively practiced in succession law from the outset of her legal career, predominantly focusing on the area of estate planning as well as estate administration and enduring powers of attorney.

Kylie aims to make this area of law accessible to all her clients, clearing any misunderstandings to ensure that clients' affairs are structured in the best way to ensure a smooth transition of wealth from her clients to their intended beneficiaries, with the right Will and the right structures supported by the right ancillary documentation. She enjoys a challenge and likes to find suitable and sometimes innovative solutions to the complex problems which our modern society causes in estate planning, especially for blended families, disabled and vulnerable beneficiaries and parents of young children.

Kylie also has a particular interest in taking the legal and technical aspects of an estate administration out of clients' hands, so they can focus on the important process of grief, while she ‘sorts everything out'.

Kylie regularly presents on estate and succession-related topics to financial advisers and accountants, including the QLD Law Society Succession Conference and LexisNexis Professional Development.


Lucie Marsden

Lucie is an associate and was admitted as a solicitor of the Supreme Court in 2001 after completing 2 years of Articles of Clerkship with a Brisbane firm. She was also admitted as a solicitor of the Supreme Court of England and Wales in 2004.

Lucie has a Business degree majoring in Accounting, as well as a Law degree from Queensland University of Technology. Lucie is a member of the Society of Trusts and Estate Practitioners and QLD Law Society.

Lucie has for the past 12 years practised exclusively in the areas of estate planning, taxation and trusts. Her understanding of financial statements, tax and superannuation issues is invaluable when reviewing a client's financial position and business structures. She enjoys working in collaboration with accountants, financial planners and other advisors to provide a holistic approach to meeting the client's estate planning objectives. Lucie provides high quality estate planning advice to clients for the transfer and protection of their wealth in a tax effective way, and to ensure that the client’s various business structures align with their estate plan.


Josh Philo

Josh is an associate and was admitted as a lawyer of the Supreme Court of Queensland in 2007 and is also admitted as a solicitor in the High Court of Australia. Josh holds a Bachelor of Laws from James Cook University and a Graduate Diploma of Legal Practice at the College of Law (Qld). He is currently studying for his Master of Laws at the University of Queensland.

Josh commenced with Estate First in 2011 and has been practicing in Estates since his admission. Josh is in charge of the estate administration division, where his commercial knowledge combined with his relaxed, down to earth manner is greatly appreciated by clients. Josh also has a particular interest in estate planning and establishing tax effective strategies for clients and their children or other intended beneficiaries. Josh's experience in commercial law is invaluable in dealing with the estate administration and estate planning aspects of family trusts, partnerships, companies and superannuation funds. He has developed skills that enable him to focus his clients and other people (including family members) on achieving their intended objective, while balancing competing financial and emotional issues. Josh's skills ensure that his clients receive a practical, easy to understand and most importantly, a valuable solution to their legal matter.


Morgann Crothers

Morgann has worked with Estate First since 2011 and has completed her Bachelor of Laws, graduating with Honours from the University of Queensland. She is a Commissioner for Declarations and a lawyer.

Since working with Estate First Lawyers, Morgann has developed a special interest in succession law with a particular focus on estate planning. She enjoys the fast paced environment and challenging work that this area of the law presents and appreciates the need to develop unique solutions for every client.

Morgann has developed particular experience in estate planning for blended families, which is a complex area of the law. She enjoys participating in client meetings, drafting sophisticated estate plans and liaising with clients at ‘the coal face' level. Morgann also assists in estate litigation and drafting in depth legal statements.


Emma O'Brien

Emma is a lawyer and holds a Bachelor of Laws (with Honours) and a Bachelor of Business (with Distinction) from the Queensland University of Technology. She was awarded the prize for the best academic result in the subject ‘Succession Law’ while she was studying at QUT.

Emma has a passion for succession law, particularly in the area of estate planning and since joining Estate First lawyers in early 2014 she has been able to immerse herself fully in this area, given that Estate First are one of only a handful of practices in Australia dealing virtually exclusively in estate planning law. Emma enjoys the detailed approach that is required to tailor clients’ estate plans to their individual circumstances and the satisfaction gained from a holistic approach to estate planning.

Prior to commencing at Estate First, Emma worked in a variety of commercial and legal roles in the Queensland Government and the construction industry. Emma’s varied life experiences assists her to better appreciate client perspectives and to explain concepts in a practical way.

Emma's particular expertise is in estate planning for client's companies, trusts and superannuation.


Sam Janssen

Sam wears a number of hats, having started with the firm from its inception in 2009.  He has almost completed his Bachelor of Commerce at The University of Queensland and so carries out a number of office management duties including accounts.  In addition, he has completed four years of his Bachelor of Laws degree and is currently achieving first class honours in his grades.  Sam also works as a paralegal in the estate planning and estate administration areas.  Sam has a sharp mind, but an empathetic approach and so is well suited to this area of law.

Sam enjoys the law and has a keen interest in succession law.


Peter Janssen

Peter is Director of the Incorporated Legal Practice that operates Estate First Lawyers and the sister brand, Corporate First Lawyers (of which he is the Divisional Head).

Peter was awarded a Bachelor of Arts and a Bachelor of Laws from the University of Queensland and was admitted as a solicitor in the Supreme Court of Queensland and High Court of Australia in 1989. He is a Fellow of the Australian Institute of Management.

He consults to Estate First Lawyers in the areas of:

  • business succession planning; and
  • Estate mediation and litigation.

In the commercial field Peter covers the areas of business and corporate advice to:

  • private & family owned businesses as well as public companies; and
  • company directors as individuals as well as Boards, CEO's and other Exec's.
